Tuesdays With Dorie - Chocolate Chunkers



I really like when recipes have steps that aren't in your typical recipe. This cookie was built a little differently and I enjoyed the process. There weren't much dry ingredients at all, mostly chocolate. I say that as if it were a bad thing. HA! Some of the chocolate was melted with butter and creamed into the little bit of sugar. So you end up with a cookie that isn't overly sweet except for the sweetness in the chocolate bits inside. This is one tasty cookie.

Claudia of Fool for Food selected this week's recipe and I think I love her. :) I'm just one of 200 or so bakers who had the opportunity to make these cookies this week. Check out what other TWD-ers have done with this amazing cookie.




As I was scooping the dough onto the baking sheet I thought to myself, "These cookies should be called chunky something." I laughed when I looked at the recipe again realizing they are indeed called chunky something - chocolate chunkers. The dough is chocolaty, the bits inside are chocolaty - Chocolate Chunkers indeed. I think there are FOUR different kinds of chocolate in these cookies. What's not to love?
They reminded me of the old Chunky bars:

Chunky, chocolaty, delicious.
I skipped the raisins though. I prefer my chocolate without rotten grapes. ;)

I do like the taste and texture of this cookie. One strange thing though - it didn't flatten out at all as it baked. So the second batch I didn't let the baking sheet cool between batches as the recipe suggests. Still a perfect ball of cookie. The third batch I tried using a tablespoon to scoop the dough out rather than my trusty cookie scoop thinking it would deliver the rustic, chunky looking cookie I was seeking. I think I like the shape of these cookies without the scoop. And that's a first for me. I use my scoop for ALL the cookies I make. Not this one though. Next time I'll use just a tablespoon and I'll suffer through the complete lack of symmetry for a wonderfully chocolate cookie like this.



I don't know why mine didn't turn out like Dorie's in the book. I followed the recipe exactly. I'll be interested to see the other TWD baker's photos.

All in all though, it is a good cookie. I'd be proud to offer them to anyone. I'm thinking some home -made vanilla ice-cream with these cookie chunks would be To. Die. For.

I'm planning a cookie baking marathon today to get caught up on last week's Whopper cookies. Ken is going to LOVE those but last week I was too mad at him to bake them. :D My little way of sticking it to the man, I guess.

If I'm still in the cookie baking mood after those I'll make oatmeal cookies and maybe snickerdoodles. My nephew is in basic training and I'm thinking some home-made cookies are in order. To help make him Army strong you know. :)

Ha-ha, they are dried grapes, no fungus aloud! That made me laugh. These sound delicious!

Hmmmm . . . maybe I should start not making cookies for my dh when I'm mad at him, instead of staying up late "unwinding". lol That would mean, though, that I'd need to start making cookies other times . . .

hee hee....sticking it to the man, that's hilarious. i do the same thing. it is awfully hard to bake for someone you're mad at. whenever i do that, i end up making dumb mistakes. love your cookies!

Great minds think alike, I guess! Funny that we both were reminded of the Chunky Bar. These look great and I hope you enjoy the Whopper Drops.

Those cookies look great! I'm not allowed (yes, I said allowed) to bake cookies. The man in my house does the baking. Do you have a good recipe for snickerdoodles? They are my favs!

We have to bake for an Army man too. Need to get busy with that. g

Yum -- those look awesome! I'm like you -- I use my scoop for everything -- interesting that it didn't work here. I LOVE making cookies!!!

Mmmm! They look great. I love the way they formed into tight little balls. I bet they were all dense and fudgy and droooooooooool!

Your cookie balls actually look really good. If they were soft inside I'll bet they were amazing. Some people flattened them a bit after they were in the oven for a while. yum, cookie time! Did you make the whopper drops?

Those are cute! I'll bet they would look good on a Christmas cookie tray.

You could maybe smush your scooped balls out a bit with the spatula before baking?
