For Rhonda - so she has something crafty to look at. :)
I made this a few years ago. A post-it holder as a birthday card for a dear friend of mine. I heard she uses it as a nameplate on her desk.

for Cami

Painted lady before getting her second coat of paint.

for the sex workers of Canada

Have you made YOUR charity washrags yet?

kitchen craft

Ok, sometimes I create something so good I just have to share!
This pizza ROCKED!
I took this dough recipe: read carefully, this one recipe is supposedly enough dough for SIX 8 to 9 inch pizzas! I made one pizza. -lol- The dough was a little dense. Still tasty though.
I didn't have any pizza sauce so I took the 8 roma tomatoes my neighbor gave me a few days ago (they were WAY ripe), skinned, seeded and chopped them. In a saucepan I added a little water to the tomatoes, a mix of seasonings: onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, basil, salt and sugar and boiled the hell out of it. It reduced nicely and was SO flavorful!
I had bacon, ham and onions as toppings along with some mozzarella cheese. Even picky Ken admitted it was good. And the best part? I didn't have to go to the store for anything! I'm so proud of myself.

Frugal AND tasty. It just doesn't get better than that!

apron done!

Once I got going, this came together very quickly. Kudos to Amy Butler for creating a pattern even this (slightly) inexperienced seamstress could handle. Her attention to detail is astounding and those who know me know I love attention to detail!
Alas, it was what came before "once I got going" that threatened to do me in. My mom saved the day! That'll learn me to buy new needles for my sewing machine. Who knew a backwards needle could muss things up so! My mom, that's who!
At first, I just had a pocket and after the hour and a half spent trying to figure out why my needle wasn't picking up the bobbin thread, I thought I'd pee myself at this:

and then came this:
I must say though - Amy Butler is most assuredly a skinny girl. Us large-and-in-charge types just might need a little more fabric on an apron.
Maybe I'll give it to my skinny sister for her birthday.
Happy Birthday Robin! (she doesn't read my blog. At least I don't think she does.)
heh heh.

in the crafting queue

Well, in the washer, currently. The fabric, that is.
I just left Cami's with wonderful Amy Butler fabrics. I'll soon be creating THIS:
In wonderful turquoise and browns. You KNOW I'll share a picture.
I also got my first big girl scissors. Thanks for the coupon, Cami! You saved me $14!
I asked for the scissors for my birthday. I'm hoping Ken forgets I already got them (and the Amy Butler book, In Stitches) and gets me something else. :)
Can't my washer run any faster?!

final product

Handmade Happiness swap on Swap-Bot.
I sent these and two personalized, altered mini-comp books.
Did I remember to take pictures of those?
Nooooooo.
This'll have to hold you:

Ken and I are working on some fabric storage for Cami.

I'll post pictures of those tonight. They rock. I was at it with the power tools again. Next thing you know, I'll have my own show on HGTV. It works. Just. Like. That.

Carry on oh crafty ones...

Story of the Day: Possible Love

I get these daily mailings from StoryPeople. The artists there create these wonderfully imaginative art pieces and display them with poetry. Here's today's story.

Wonderfully apropos.

"She learned to love him before he thought it was even possible, so he didn't have a chance to hide & mess it up & while it was a little scary at times, mainly he could not even imagine the world without her there."

work is love made visible

One down. One to go.
These are a gift for my cousin's new grandbaby, due in September.
Mary Jane booties.
Could they BE any cuter? I think not.
I'd like to try them in black. They might be cuter in black. :)
Pattern can be found here. Go get you some cuteness.
(thanks Crystal!)

P.S. The heading is a quote I found today. Truer words were never spoken.

Work is love made visible.

Good Morning Glory

We try to plant these every year.
I'm amazed how these tiny, fleeting blooms can bring my husband so much joy. He loves them. We have pages and pages of morning glory photos. He asked me this morning, "Will you go out and take pictures for me?" He was running late.
That's the magic of flowers, I guess.
I must admit, this is lovely.
Good morning, Ken.

happy hooker

Helping Cami with a washcloth drive.
It's been interesting as I knit in public having folks come up to me and say, "Whatcha making?"
"Um . . . er . . . washcloths for hookers. "
And I'm not kidding.
Here's how the story unfolded:
In the beginning . . .
From Rabbitch:
Sunday, July 08, 2007
"I'm doing a drive for washcloths, for the Women's Information Safe House. This is an agency that provides services to survival sex workers on Vancouver's Downtown East Side. We're a very prosperous and wealthy city, however ironically we also have the poorest neighbourhood in all of Canada. Most of these ladies aren't out there by choice, however poverty and addiction have driven them to sell what most of us give away for free through love, affection, or fun.
They don't have a choice.
The Woman's Information Safe House provides coffee, showers, food, educational resources, and sometimes a place to crash for an hour or two. Most social services are on very limited budgets, and although WISH can provide towels, washcloths are out of the question (as they are at all shelters that I have dealt with through the years). So ...
every single one of these ladies is someone's daughter. Many are someone's sister, mother or auntie. For a multitude of reasons, their families can't or won't take care of them (often their families don't know how they are making their living, which falls into the "can't" category in my books). We can't get everyone off the streets and we can't support everyone. Hell, I have trouble supporting my own family, as you know. However ... we can make a washcloth so that they have something handmade to wash themselves with."

yarn porn cards

Thanks to Rhonda for the wonderful yarn porn!
I made these darling, simple notecards for Cami.
Now she wants me to make a bunch to sell in the store.
Figures. ;)
