if your cellular plan has you paying for each outgoing text message you can send them from your email account for free.
if you know the recipient's carrier, simply type in the phone number before the proper address below:
alltel: @message.alltel.com
AT&T: @txt.att.net
Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: @tmomail.net
Verizon: @vtext.com
Virgin Mobile: @vmobl.com

beware though - if your recipient is paying for each text message they receive this idea only works well for you! :)
